Canine Conditioning and Fitness

At Jenny Lewis Animal Wellness we use the Canine Conditioning Academy’s foundation, intermediate and advanced programs that focus on improving your animal's physical fitness and core strength.  These programs are a popular choice for both pet owners and sporting and working dog owners who are looking to keep their animals active, healthy and in peak physical condition.  The Canine Conditioning Academy is bridging the gap between canine therapy and training. The programs are science based, focusing on correct form which leads to correct function. Using human and equine exercise principles that re-educate neuromuscular function, our aim is to re-balance the canine body and correct movement patterns which will improve performance and reduce the risk of injury.  Our unique programs are designed to develop canine strength from the inside out.  The exercises are safe and are proved to correctly condition muscles in a measurable way, as part of balanced and thorough conditioning program. We take a step by step approach beginning at the core, and moving toward sport specific training (if applicable), using methods and easily sourced equipment that can be integrated into your dogs lifestyle.

Foundation conditioning

Foundation Conditioning is the key to a fit, healthy, flexible, balanced dog.  All dogs will start at foundation level, which will help them to get the best out of life and reach their full athletic potential in whatever they do.  However, once completing the foundation, both dog and owner may be keen to continue their conditioning journey with the intermediate and advanced level programs.  These levels are called ‘Canine Crossfit’ and are delivered in a circuit training style which are both fun and challenging!

There are well over 100 different exercises (with new exercises always being added) that can be introduced to provide a lifetime of enjoyment and fitness for your dog.

What are the benefits of Canine Conditioning?

  • Develop core strength
  • Promote correct muscle recruitment
  • Address muscular asymmetry and imbalance
  • Improves posture, flexibility, balance and coordination
  • Can promote calmness and build confidence
  • Improve the bond between you and your dog
  • Improve performance in sporting and working dogs
  • Reduce the risk of injury

Initial Assessment

  • ALL dogs starting conditioning will require an initial assessment
  • Your dog MUST be assessed to be fit and able.  Safe training is a priority for your dog, so your dog’s suitability for training must be thoroughly assessed to ensure any requirement for referral to a vet or appropriate therapist is not overlooked.
  • A thorough medical and management history form will be emailed to you to complete prior to your first session
  • Your dog’s condition will be assessed using static, dynamic, ground assessments and range of motion analysis techniques
  • This allows any conditioning program to be tailored appropriately to support your dogs needs and ensures all exercise provisions are safe for your dog to perform.
